A recent feel-good story that went viral has turned ugly.

And now supporters like Anheuser-Busch are cutting ties with the young man who pledged to donate more than $1 million of ‘beer money’ to a children’s hospital.

Here’s the unfortunate deal…

After holding up a sign on September 14, asking people to send him money for beer during a college football game Iowa State fan Carson King ended raising more than $1 million, when that appeal was picked by ESPN’s College GameDay broadcast, and donations started flooding in.

His efforts became the “ beer story of week” when King announced that he’d be donating that unexpected windfall to  University of Iowa’s Stead Children’s Hospital and majors like Anheuser-Busch and Venmo got involved.

But now  the Des Moines Register dredged up a couple of racist tweets that King, now 24, had posted when he was 16, during what it described as a “routine background check” of the subject’s social media history.

According to MarketWatch They included “one comparing black mothers to gorillas and another making light of black people killed in the Holocaust,” according to the paper.

King told the Register on Tuesday that the tweets are “not something that I’m proud of at all.”

He also apologized in a press conference to local TV stations on Tuesday, saying, “I am embarrassed and stunned to reflect on what I thought was funny when I was 16 years old.”

Since the Des Moines Register’s discovery King has deleted the offensive tweets, and shared his full mea culpa online:
