Holiday Drinking: New Dark Lagers And Imperial Stouts
The winter holidays are officially ON. And we’ve some fun new releases that pair smartly with the season.
Brewed For More Than 375 Years (Harrison, NY) – Paulaner USA is celebrating the winter holidays with an imported classic which has a nearly 400 year history.
Brewed with specially curated Munich malt, and now sporting a sleek new look complete with raised bottle embossing and updated label graphics, Paulaner Salvator is a robust 7.9% bottom-fermented Double Bock that’s especially tasty at this time of year.
Peanut Butter Cup (Salt Lake City, ID) – Epic Brewing has announced a new cold-weather offering which was inspired by one of America’s favorite candies, the peanut butter cup. The first of its 2021 Rotating 16oz Can Series, Epic Midnight Munchies Peanut Butter Stout is an 8.5% ABV Imperial Stout that will become available in 16oz cans at Epic Brewing locations in Utah and Colorado as well as select markets starting January 5th.
Darkness, Darkness (Portland, OR) – Von Ebert Brewing is saying goodbye to a truly tough year, and hello to a hopefully better 2021 with a new addition to its growing family of artisan lagers. Taking its lead from an ageless Czech Republic brewing tradition, is a 5.1% ABV decocted Dark Lager with roasted biscuit and chocolate-covered raisin notes, and a rich creamy mouthfeel.
Bohemian Dark Lager can be thought of as a cousin to Schwarzbier and Dunkel in the same way that German Pils and Czech Pils are related, but still quite different overall,” commented Jason Hanson, Lead Brewer and Blender, Von Ebert Glendoveer. “The Czechs also make a great dark beer that’s popular in the area, but not seen much outside of Bohemia.”
Festive Fruits (Inglewood, CA) – Three Weavers Brewing is returning a seasonal favorite renowned for using two specially curated exotic fruits. Combining locally grown Yuzu and Buddha’s Hand Citron fruit with a healthy dose of Citra, El Dorado and Sabro hops, Three Weavers The Messenger Sunny IPA is a 7.3% ABV India Pale Ale that’s a great way to greet the coming year.
First brewed in 2013 as a collaboration between Three Weavers and Noble Ale Works, the bright IPA was named “The Messenger” and crafted to introduce the world to the Three Weavers idea of beer: that great beer is made with a balance of flavors and the use of interesting and seasonally-driven ingredients.
“Yuzu is believed to be a hybrid of sour mandarin orange and an ancient citrus variety from China,” said Brewmaster Alexandra Nowell. “It comes across in the beer as an extremely fragrant cross of super sweet lemon and bright and zesty lime. Buddha’s Hand is one of the stranger-looking fruits of the world, with long, ghoulish fingers and an aroma I can best describe as lemon blossom meets lemon Skittles. Together, they harmonize in a way that gives The Messenger its characteristic sunny disposition.”
