Beer drinking games are what they are, and in spite of a growing sobriety movement, they aren’t going away. Young people will always party and, more times than not, that will include intoxicants, be they cannabis or alcohol, and social games.

And we should probably add, do pace yourself and drink responsibly. Know your limits, stay hydrated, and ensure everyone gets home safely.

That said, here are five classic beer drinking games and how to play them.

Beer Pong

What You Need:

  • A long table
  • 10 cups per team
  • A ping pong ball
  • Beer

How to Play:

  1. Arrange 10 cups in a triangle formation on each side of the table.
  2. Fill the cups with beer (or another beverage of choice).
  3. Players take turns trying to throw a ping pong ball into the opposing team’s cups.
  4. If a ball lands in a cup, the opposing team must drink the beer in that cup and remove it from play.
  5. The first team to eliminate all of their opponent’s cups wins.

Flip Cup

What You Need:

  • A long table
  • Plastic cups
  • Beer

How to Play:

  1. Split players into two teams and line them up on opposite sides of the table.
  2. Each player fills their cup with beer and drinks it.
  3. Once finished, the player must place the cup on the edge of the table and flip it using their fingers until it lands upside down.
  4. The next player in line cannot start until the previous player has successfully flipped their cup.
  5. The first team to finish flipping all their cups wins.

Kings (Kings Cup)

What You Need:

  • A deck of cards
  • A large central cup
  • Beer or mixed drinks

How to Play:

  1. Spread the deck of cards in a circle around the central cup.
  2. Players take turns drawing a card and performing the action assigned to that card (rules vary but commonly include):
    • Ace: Waterfall (everyone drinks in a chain reaction).
    • Two: You choose someone to drink.
    • Three: You drink.
    • Four: “Floor” (last person to touch the floor drinks).
    • Five: “Guys” (all men drink).
    • Six: “Chicks” (all women drink).
    • Seven: “Heaven” (last person to raise their hand drinks).
    • Eight: Pick a mate (choose someone who drinks with you).
    • Nine: Rhyme time (say a word, others must rhyme).
    • Ten: Categories (choose a category, others must name things in it).
    • Jack: Make a rule (everyone must follow).
    • Queen: Ask a question (if answered, the person drinks).
    • King: Pour beer into the central cup; the last King drawn drinks it.

Quarters

What You Need:

  • A small cup
  • A quarter
  • Beer

How to Play:

  1. Players take turns trying to bounce a quarter off the table into a cup.
  2. If successful, the player chooses another player to drink.
  3. If the shot is missed, the next person takes a turn.
  4. Play continues until a set score is reached or until players call it quits.

Drunk Jenga

What You Need:

  • A Jenga set
  • A marker
  • Beer

How to Play:

  1. Write different rules or challenges on each Jenga block (e.g., “Take 2 drinks,” “Do a dance,” “Switch seats”).
  2. Players take turns removing a block from the tower and following the instruction on it.
  3. The player who causes the tower to collapse must finish their drink.
