American Alcohol Consumption At Record Low

On August 13th Gallup released the bombshell news that “the percentage of US adults who say they consume alcohol has fallen to 54%, the lowest by one percentage point in Gallup’s nearly 90-year trend. This coincides with a growing belief among Americans that moderate alcohol consumption is bad for one’s health, now the majority view for the first time.”

And this decline in alcohol consumption isn’t a reflection of Americans simply shifting their choice of “mood enhancement” to cannabis products.

This from Gallup’s report…

“Declines in alcohol consumption do not appear to be caused by people shifting to other mood-altering substances — in particular, recreational marijuana, which is now legal in about half of U.S. states. Although marijuana use is higher today than a decade ago, it has been fairly steady over the past four years and thus doesn’t appear to be a factor in people choosing not to drink alcohol.”

Bottom line…

Americans are consuming less alcohol than ever before, with self-reported drinking down to 54% after consecutive declines. Belief that even moderate drinking is bad for health has risen to a new high of 53%, as consumer’s report drinking less, and less frequently.
