Bad Ideas In Brewing – Eggnog Beer

Hey, no one’s perfect…as we at American Craft Beer understand better than most. That said, there are some brewing ideas that should never have happened. And we’re blaming the winter holidays for this one.

Here’s the Deal

We’ll never be fans of Corn Dog and Funnel Cake Beer or disturbing concepts like a beer brewed with goose poop. And while less egregious than a cricket beer, the idea of a beer that tastes like eggnog is truly disturbing.

Let’s start with the fact that eggnog itself is extremely polarizing.

For those of you that have never been confronted with the questionable holiday drink, eggnog is a rich, dairy-based beverage traditionally made with milk, cream, sugar, raw egg yolks, and whipped egg whites (which gives it a frothy texture, and its name).

Eggnog can be served cold or warmed and often with brandy, whiskey or bourbon to help you forget that you’re drinking a milky raw egg mix that looks like curdled gruel.

But in spite of its off-putting character eggnog beer is apparently a thing.

According to InsideHook, Pennsylvania’s Spring House Brewing has made multiple eggnog stouts over the years. And in spite of what it says about the locals, eggnog beers like their The Martians Kidnap Santa sell out quickly around Christmas.

Kane Brewing, a great brewery in New Jersey, makes an eggnog IPA with, we think, an appropriate name, Do I Even Like Eggnog?.

And Carton Brewing, another fine New Jersey brewery, makes a nitro-infused pastry cream ale called Will It Nog?, that they swear by.

So yes, unfortunately eggnog beer is a thing…

Bottom Line

Any beer that’s built to mimic eggnog to begin with is a non-starter as far as we’re concerned. And if you’ve attended any parties over the holidays that served eggnog, or eggnog beer, we strongly suggest that you sever those relationships IMMEDIATELY.

Because in the world of BAD IDEAS IN BREWING, Eggnog beer ranks right up there, and like COVID-19 this seasonal trend refuses to go away.
