Hey, no one’s perfect…as we at American Craft Beer understand better than most. That said, there are some brewing ideas out there that should never have happened. And we’re blaming Cadbury and Goose Island Beer for this one.

Let’s be clear, we’ve never been big fans of Corn Dog and Funnel Cake Beer or dangerously misguided ideas like a beer brewed with deer antlers. But we’d rather drink windshield washer fluid than ever submit to a beer that was brewed to taste like a crème egg, a candy whose appeal is primarily limited to 3 year olds., Bad Ideas In Brewing – Cadbury Creme Egg Beer

And before you hit us back that creme is misspelled, know that in this particular case it’s an Anglicized version of French word crème, or as it’s more commonly spelled in the US, cream.

Here’s the Deal

A Cadbury Creme Egg is a chocolate-like confection produced in the shape of an egg, originating from the British chocolatier Cadbury.

The Easter egg inspired candy consists of a thick chocolate-like shell containing an enzymatically-derived sweet white and yellow filling that resembles fondant. The filling mimics the albumen and yolk of a soft boiled egg from a fowl such as a chicken or goose.

And we have to ask…does that sound good to you?

But what do we know?  The candy is a big deal in the United Kingdom. Almost More than 200 million Cadbury Creme Eggs are sold in the UK alone every year, despite the only being available around Easter.

YouGov poll has ranked the gooey confection as the most famous candy in the UK which may explain why Goose Island Beer’s UK arm partnered with Cadbury to craft Golden Goo-Beer-Lee’ a stout designed to taste like a Creme Egg.

Not concerned that the brewery had damaged its reputation, Andrew Walton, Master Brewer at Goose Island remained positive about his involvement and the beer itself…

‘With the Golden Goo-Beer-Lee Creme Stout we knew that we would be reaching a wide range of people with different levels of experience with craft beer!

, Bad Ideas In Brewing – Cadbury Creme Egg Beer ‘We wanted to make sure that for whoever tried this beer, it would be unique and delicious. The tasty flavors of the stout complement the iconic Cadbury Creme Egg; we wanted to big up the chocolate and creaminess of the beer while keeping it super drinkable.’

And Raphael Capitanit the brand manager for Cadbury Creme Egg, who probably can’t believe that her company talked Goose Island Beer into this, was understandably excited…

“We have always celebrated the unique and wonderful ways of enjoying a Cadbury Creme Egg and with this launch we are taking EATertainment to a whole new level.”

Bottom Line

American Craft Beer has long taken the position that the only individuals, other than children, who actually appreciate crème egg candies are dentists…and that it’s not something you drink.

The only excuse for a beer that tastes like a crème Easter egg confection is that someone accidently dropped the candy in your drink…

And that ‘someone’ needs to apologize and get you another beer.
