Are Cannabis Farms Coming to Napa Valley?

, Are Cannabis Farms Coming to Napa Valley?

Grapes and grass in Napa Valley? It’s a potential marriage made heaven…but it won’t come to vote till early next year.

Here’s the deal…

It’s a sign of pot’s ‘growing’ commercial viability that measure to legalize commercial cannabis farming in California’s  wine-rich Napa Valley will be put to a vote next March according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

And with that in mind, the Napa County Board of Supervisors decided to consider a proposal to allow commercial cannabis farming in the world-famous wine destination.

But rather than simply adopting the Napa County Cannabis Regulation Initiative they’ve decided to put it up for a public vote that will take place next year.

If given the green light, the initiative would allow for the cultivation for the commercial cultivation of cannabis in Napa Valley though pot won’t be able to be grown on the same lot of land as a vineyard.

And it’s hardly like the pot trade is going is going to significantly impact the region’s vineyard acreage if this initiative is approved. The proposal only allows each business, the capability to grow an acre of marijuana max.

Marijuana was legalized in California in 2016. But the Napa Valley, renowned for its vineyards, has yet to permit cannabis farming

Some local grape growers have expressed concerns the odor from cannabis cultivation in Napa could potentially contaminate grapes grown nearby.

The move to legalize commercial cannabis farming in the valley is being backed by the Napa Valley Cannabis Association, (of course it is) an organization made up of entrepreneurs in both the wine and weed industries, who believe grapes and grass can happily coexist.

That organization canvassed local residents, successfully gathering the thousands of signatures necessary to allow for next year’s March 3 vote.

Eric Sklar, co-founder of the Napa Valley Cannabis Association, was probably not smoking a blunt when he told the Chronicle that he believes the commercial cultivation of cannabis in Napa would help boost the local economy…..

“For two-and-a-half years all we’ve been asking is for the supervisors to have a discussion about what’s best for Napa Valley in terms of a cannabis ordinance, and that’s what they did at the last minute.”
