Newbies – New Craft Beer Releases That You Want to Look Out For – June 3, 2014
So many beers, So little time…Newbies is your essential map to the “best of the best” and the hottest new craft beers rolling out each week. From Goose Island’s homage to Belgium’s first female Brewmaster to the latest from Deschutes and Lakewood Brewing – we’ve all kinds of beers that you’ll want to chase down.
Three Floyds and Firestone Walker Debut a Special Collaboration at the 2014 Invitational (Paso Robles, CA) – One of the most buzzed about beers at last weekend’s Firestone Walker Invitational was a collaboration between Three Floyds Brewing and Firestone Walker that made its debut at noon last Saturday in Paso Robles. Initially brewed by Nick Floyd and Matt Brynildson for the 2013 festival, Ol’ Leghorn is a massively dry-hopped Blonde Barleywine blend that’s been aging in a combination of bourbon barrels and new American oak wine barrels since last year. This one-of-a-kind collaboration went on sale at 10 am on Sunday at Firestone Walker’s Brewery Store and lines started forming for the release an hour before the store opened. There will be a very limited market release later in the month – so be ready.
Goose Island’s Flanders Wild (Chicago, IL) – Goose Island continues its winning streak with the recent release of a special homage to Belgium’s first female Brewmaster, Rose Blancquaert-Merckx, who worked tirelessly to share the Oude-Bruin style with the world. Harkening back to West Flanders , Madame Rose is a delicate, 6.7% ABV Belgian-style Wild Ale that’s been aged for 18 months in cabernet barrels with wild yeast and fresh tart Michigan cherries.
Deep Texas Pils (Dallas, TX) – Firestone Walker’s David Walker made an interesting observation about the Pilsner’s craft beer resurgence while we were hanging with him recently at SAVOR. He said that craft brewers were readdressing the Pilsner style because they “have finally gotten good enough at what they do to take on the difficult style with confidence.” We think that David makes a good point. A true Pilsner is expensive to brew and unlike so many hop-happy IPAs, leaves little margin for error. That’s why we get excited when we come across a truly great Pilsner like the Lakewood Brewing Company’s brilliant summer seasonal. Zomer Pils is a true, deep Texas hot weather refresher brewed with Belgian Pilsner malt and Noble hops – a classic.
Deschutes Makes a Big Foray into the Belgian Influenced IPA (Bend, OR) – The Deschutes Breweryis releasing a brand-new Bond Street Series addition to their lineup and we’re pretty jazzed about this one. Foray Belgian style IPA is a 6.5% ABV Pale Ale brewed using Belgian yeast with hints of apples and pears and a big Galaxy hop nose. Foray is available now in 22 oz. bottles and on draft – so you know what to do.
Catch and Release (Atlanta, GA) – SweetWater Brewing is returning a summertime favorite of ours that’s part of their popular Catch & Release Series.SweetWater Waterkeeper Hefeweizen rings in at a cool 5.7% ABV, delivering big banana and clove notes and finishing with a tease of lemon. This unfiltered wheat ale is rolling out now in six-packs and on draft as well as part of SweetWater’s Tackle Box variety packs.
