The beer biz never sleeps at American Craft Beer. And here’s just some of what’s been happening in the beer world while you were drinking your way through the weekend.

Instant Beer Powder Developed That Will Reduce CO2

We’re all familiar with powdered coffee and instant hot chocolate but is there a demand powdered beer? Two German brewers think the world is ready for its new powdered invention which they expect to bring to market by the end of the year according to the Drinks Business.

Klosterbrauerei Neuzelle a monastery brewery in Germany hopes that the beer powder it has developed could be a turning point for the carbon footprint of beer exports – eschewing bottles and crates in favor of the much lighter powder packets.

“We have calculated that, if we now relate this to Germany, we can save about 3 to 5 percent of the CO2 emissions for Germany alone,” said the brewer’s general manager Stefan Fritsche. “And if you look at it globally, that would be about half a percent of CO2 emissions worldwide that we could reduce.”

The current instant beer powder is non-alcoholic but the company is bullish about the possibilities.

“We want the complete beer taste. We have the foam, we already have the beer taste. We want to add the carbon dioxide in powder form. We want to add the alcohol in powder form. We can do all that with powder. And of course it is absolutely fascinating that we have succeeded. For the first time worldwide.”

JetBlue Now Offering Non-alcoholic Beer On Flights

JetBlue is now offering the multi-award-winning Athletic Upside Dawn Golden on all its flights.

“We’re excited to take flight with JetBlue and allow flyers to relax at 35,000 feet with a great-tasting alternative to full-strength brews,” said Bill Shufelt, Athletic Brewing co-founder & CEO. “This is a huge milestone for Athletic and a key partnership for us in the travel industry.”

Launched in 2018, Athletic Brewing developed a proprietary brewing method to craft beer that doesn’t rely on any alcohol removal techniques and fully ferments its brews to be less than 0.5% ABV, which is the legal limit for non-alcoholic beer in the US.

Athletic Brewing is the second-largest non-alcoholic beer brand in the US, with dollar sales growing 94%. The Brewers Association ranked Athletic Brewing, which has breweries in Milford, CT and San Diego, CA, as the 13th biggest craft brewer in the United States today.

According to a recent survey, one-third of Americans are trying to consume less alcohol in 2023. At the same time, year-to-date dollar sales of non-alcoholic beer are up 34%. So clearly there’s a market for this.
