Untappd is a geosocial networking service and mobile phone app that allows users to rate the beers they’re drinking, and share those check-ins and their locations with their friends.
And the beer style they’re drinking the most is the IPA, whose origins can be traced back to 18th century England
Today’s IPAs are certainly nothing like their predecessors, which would have originally been brewed using primarily East Kent Goldings hops. Today’s IPAs contain just about any imaginable hop available, grown anywhere they can survive.
The more recent explosion of the style in the US can be traced back to the popularity of Anchor Brewing’s use of the Cascade hop in their Liberty Ale, brewed first in 1975 to honor the anniversary of Paul Revere’s ride to warn us the British were coming and they most certainly have arrived.
Founded by Greg Avola and Tim Mather in 2010, Untappd’s check-in’s provided the data used in this IPA ranking.
