The Winter Holiday celebrations have already begun and with them comes the beers of the season. But thankfully not all holiday beers are the same and some refuse to play it safe…And we’ve a number of “unlikely” seasonal classics that will take you and your holidays down “roads less travelled.”
Santa’s Little Helper | Port Brewing | San Marcos, CA – Port Brewing’s amusingly named Santa’s Little Helper is their 10% Imperial Stout that starts with dark cocoa and roasted coffee aromatics and ends with just a kiss of hops. If given a choice between Port Brewing’s nuanced winter offering and Uncle Elmer’s peanut fruitcake – it’s not even close.
Hanukkah, Chanukah: Pass The Beer | Shmaltz Brewing | Clifton Park, NY – Billed as the only “official” Chanukah Beer Shmaltz Brewing’s holiday offering effectively takes the “Christ” out of Christmas. Hanukkah, Chanukah: Pass The Beer, is an 8% ABV dark winter seasonal brewed with 8 malts and 8 Hops.
Alpha Klaus | 3 Floyds Brewing | Munster, IN – Hey we’d pick this winter offering for its name alone! 3 Floyds Alpha Klaus is a delicious 6% ABV holiday Porter brewed with English chocolate malt, Mexican sugar and — as is typical with most 3 Floyds beers – loads and loads of hops. Audacious and unapologetic this is the perfect beer to drink when you’re re-watching Bad Santa with friends.
Christmas Ale | Bell’s Brewery | Kalamazoo, MI – A departure from the traditional “Winter Warmer” in so many ways, Bell’s almost sessionable 5.5% ABV Christmas Ale forgoes the obvious holiday spicing in favor of Michigan-grown barley that provides natural toffee tones.
8 Maids-a-Milking | The Bruery | Orange County, CA – The 8th beer in The Bruery’s ongoing 12 Days of Christmas Series, 8 Maids-a-Milking is a 11.3% lactose-crazed Milk Stout with a mouthfeel and sweetness that’s complimented by robust layers of milk chocolate and subtle spice accents provided by the brewery’s distinctive house Belgian yeast.
