It’s hard to believe that Munster, Indiana-based 3 Floyds Brewing has been crafting its “not normal” beers for 23 years now…or that it’s now one of the biggest craft breweries in the country.
Founded in 1996 by brothers Nick and Simon and their father Mike Floyd, 3 Floyds has grown from a small heavy metal brewery with a cult-like following to one of the nation’s Top 50 breweries by sales volume in 2018.
The Brewers Association ranked 3 Floyds as the 39th largest craft brewery in the country last year, even though it is only distributed in the Midwest,” according to the Northwest Indiana Times…Compared to other similar-sized breweries its retail footprint is relatively concise. And in addition to is significant presence in Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland, 3 Floyds’ beers are also distributed in Wisconsin, Ohio and Kentucky.
3 Floyds has garnered a huge reputation over the years for its “not normal” beers and one Russian Imperial Stout in particular that has its own festival, an event that draws beer pilgrims from all around the world.
Held historically on the last Saturday in April but recently moved to mid-May, Dark Lord Day celebrates the annual release of its legendary Dark Lord Stout, a massive high-octane affair that has beer ranked the #15 best beer in the world on RateBeer.
Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout is available that day, and that day alone. And along with a changing roster of even more limited variations it has become one of the most sought after and collectable beers in the world.
Adding to the buzz of what some are now calling the” Metallica of Brewing” 3 Floyds Brewing is planning for a major upgrade to its brewery in Indiana.

For the last 22 years 3 Floyds has been housed in an unassuming industrial park location that is set to undergo a profound transformation. And the new buildout, which will extend their existing home into a neighboring property, is a complete paradigm shift for the acclaimed brewery…
Designed by HKS a global architectural firm based in Dallas, who’ve done some huge projects around the world, Three Floyds new digs will expand its building in all directions to include 114,423 square feet of manufacturing and warehouse area, 7,442 square feet of retail area, 7,356 square feet of brewpub and restaurant space, and 7,668 square feet of office space.
According to the NWI Times the new campus-like setting will more than double the brewery’s size to over 136,000 square feet, double the scale of its brewpub and dramatically expand its retail area and office space.
Expected to open in late 2019 or early 2020, 3 Floyds’ new state-of-the-art destination compound will also feature several multi-leveled green spaces, including a great lawn and a 16,706-square-foot terraced garden for outdoor dining.
