With the 2020 presidential campaign in full swing, prospective Democrats are looking to boost their populist credentials by pushing their “beer cred.”

Here’s the deal

Beer has long been associated with politics. It’s seen as a proletariat drink and politician’s need proles to vote for them, so many are playing the beer card.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) threw down first when took to Instagram to livestream herself swigging beer in the kitchen…

“Hold on a sec, I’m gonna get me a beer,” Warren announced early in New Year’s Eve Presidential announce, before taking a hearty swig on camera.

And no matter what you think of her polices, the presentation was as a bogus play for beer cred by the candidate…And led to an endless parade of asocial media mockery and conservative backlash…

The image of “the multi-million-dollar Cambridge law professor poppin’ a brewski” (in the words of Michael Graham from the Boston Herald) seemed unlike4ly enough to many, but Warren’s “I’m gonna get me a beer,” moment seemed “to drive home the awkwardness of the moment,” according to the Atlantic and came SNL ready.

If her video strategy was for beer cred she might done better being seen swigging something from Trillium Brewing…If her play was “I drink shit beer just like you proles,” she should have chugged a can of Old Milwaukee or Keystone Light…

Warren later revealed to NBC 10 that she was drinking a Michelob Ultra which she, in this case very creditably, described as “the club soda of beers.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden, who is currently leading in the Democratic field doesn’t drink (hey neither does Trump and he got elected).

But he did make a point of buying a round of beers during a stop at New York City’s Stonewall Inn during Pride Month according to The Hill. Which we gotta think checked off several boxes.

And even though he’s not doing all that well in the polls, when it comes to true beer cred, John Hickenlooper is the clear leader…In addition to having a successful run as the 42nd governor of Colorado he co-founded Denver’s Wynkoop Brewing.

So he has the American Craft Beer endorsement (whether he wants it, or not).
