Leinenkugel’s is a Wisconsin brewery with six generations of family history that’s been brewing beer for almost 150 years. It was purchased by the Miller Brewing company in 1988 and is now part of the Molson Coors family of beers.
And even though they are now a Big Beer property Leinenkugel’s has retained its regional Wisconsin identity and has rabid following that love what they do.
And for years those fans have been begging for the return of a special summertime ale that they think has been in hibernation for way too long…
And now thanks to an online petition signed by Dick Leinenkugel himself, Sunset Wheat, a 4.9% ABV a citrusy Witbier with a touch of blueberry and coriander, has returned.
“As soon as we hibernated it, we started to hear from drinkers about their love of Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat,” says Leinenkugel, president of Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing told Beer & Beyond. Fans of the beer sent letters and emails demanding the beer’s return, and when Leinenkugel saw an online petition had more than 1,500 signatures, he joined their calls to bring the beer back.
“It’s a people’s movement,” Leinenkugel added. “It was a groundswell of fans whose love of Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat spurred them to petition us through the web, but also with calls, texts, emails and more.”
To celebrate its momentous return Leinenkugel’s is offering one lucky winner $10,000 a Labor Day trip to a Wisconsin cabin and the opportunity to live stream one of Wisconsin’s famous late summer sunsets with a Sunset Wheat Ale in hand, on the brewery’s Instagram page.
To be considered Sunset Wheat fans need to submit their own video on Instagram explaining why they deserve to be Leinenkugel’s’ first-ever Sunset Streamer, tagging @leinenkugels and using the hashtags #sunsetstreamer and #contest.
You can apply now through August 18, but you’ll need to be 21 years or older and we suggest you pull out all the stops for the opportunity to ride into that sunset with $10k in hand.
