Untappd Names The Best Pastry Stouts of 2022

Untappd is a popular geosocial networking service and mobile phone app that allows its users to rate the beers they’re drinking, and share those check-ins and their locations with their friends.

And although the year’s still young, Untappd recently named the platform’s most popular Pastry Stouts of 2022, a beer style that can be polarizing. Intentionally sweet, Pastry Stouts combine the essence of rich dark high-octane stouts with decadent dessert-like flavors and confectionary components.

The opposite of a session anything, Pastry Stouts are beers that end an evening, they tend to be super strong, super sweet and if you’re watching your calories, forget about it.

Fans love them while critics (who may not be dessert people to begin with) dismiss Pastry Stouts as over-the-top and excessive.

“At its most basic, these stouts feature culinary ingredients that drive home the impression of rich dessert flavors,” JC Tetreault, founder of Trillium Brewing one of the prominent producers of the style explained to Hop Culture…”Most brewers will employ milk sugar (lactose) to carry a lot of the creamy structure that folks have come to expect.”

“Trillium strictly adheres to the use of real, highest-quality ingredients in our pastry stouts,” Tetreault added. “Which often stands in direct contrast with the widespread use of essences or ‘natural’ flavorings and extracts.”

“Pastry stouts aren’t terribly new, Tetreault added “but the proliferation has absolutely exploded, seemingly in tandem with direct-to-consumer sales.”

Unlike the Hazy IPA, which was named an official style by the Brewers Association in 2018, Pastry  Stouts don’t have any formal designation, but most brewers would agree that they’ve become a cultural phenomenon and are most definitely a thing.
