The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – November 14, 2012

It’s Wednesday and its Rumor Mill Time! It’s another week down and another roundup of news. We are always on the lookout for new and interesting things that find their way into the rumor mill, and this week we have something for everyone: new brewers, new beers, hockey, sushi, and amendment 64. As we said…something for everyone. Now, sort of like what Bull said in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves: “to the beer!”

No Hockey? No Beer (Hockeytown, USA) Whether you are a fan of the National Hockey League or not, you probably get how the games not being played has an effect on businesses. Recently a big brewer announced that their sales had “flat-lined” due to empty arenas and bars. While we probably won’t lose any sleep over the breweries losses, we do think about the craft breweries and the bars in the area. We are all part of one big eco-system.

Nachos, IPA, and Sashimi (Huntsville, AL) On December 5th, Drake’s, a new restaurant, will open in Huntsville, Alabama that will quench your thirst with 24 different beers on tap, including many local brews. But what will you wash down with that fine beverage? Maybe Buffalo chicken? Chicken Nachos? Or maybe a Rainbow Roll? That’s right, sushi. Well, why not?

Save the Drama for Your Momma (Petaluma, CA) Yesterday we posted an article about how Budweiser is releasing a series of beers aimed at grabbing you, the craft beer drinker. Well, it turns out that as we were posting that, Tony Magee, founder and owner of Lagunitas Brewing Company took to Twitter to call out the big brewers. Magee, who is a tour de force in the Twitterverse, posted (amongst other things) “But d guy from MillerBlueMoon left just as I started. He bragged about his…craft credentials & how much his research has told him how to get to you. You’re all a demographic to him, nuttin more.” As Lagunitas grows, expect this to become a bigger issue.

North Texas Has a New Brewer (Sherman, TX) Jeremy Roberts and wife Natalie will take their small home brewing operation into a brand new home. They recently signed a lease on a space to open 903 Brewers. Welcome to the world 903, cheers!

Hey, It’s Your Life (Boulder, CO.) Look, we aren’t here to make your choices, but with some of the decisions made last week, there is a question on many people’s minds: Is pot beer coming? According to the Coloradoan: “While commercial brewers have no plans to use marijuana in their beers based on the fact that brewers’ recipes are regulated by a federal government that still considers marijuana illegal, homebrewers have been, and are expected to continue, using marijuana in homemade beer.” That sounds….interesting….

Add a Pinup to The Wall (Dover, DE) The Dominion Brewing Company will be releasing their newest pinup girl-laden bottle on Thursday: Morning Glory Espresso Stout. The final of the “Bomber Girls” for 2012, Morning Glory uses locally roasted coffee beans and Bravo hops make Master Brewer Walter Trifari very happy: “That extra effort has allowed us to create an exquisitely balanced, full-flavored espresso stout and a community partnership that will extend well beyond the production of this beer.”
