We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

SweetWater Looks West Young Man (Atlanta, GA) – SweetWater Brewing announced last Thursday that they will they are actively exploring location options out west, with the intention of building a second brewery. Last summer the brewery purchased equipment from Pyramid Brewing in Berkeley, including a fully automated, 4 vessel, 130 barrel brewhouse, 3 silos and over 31 fermentation and brite beer tanks.  This equipment will give SweetWater the ability to brew up to 420,000 barrels at the future location. They are also considering a third location somewhere in the Midwest.

Tour de Fat Nets Big Bucks For Charity (Ft Collins, CO) – New Belgium’s Tour de Fat, a traveling tour of bicycle advocacy and hilarity in charity, raised $647,668 for local nonprofits this season, totaling more than $4 million in its 16-year stretch. This year’s total is up more than $20,000 from last year. The event is free, but all proceeds from beer and merchandise sales and donations in each city go to local nonprofit organizations focused on making communities a better place to ride a bike.

Impending Beer Can Crisis (Everywhere USA) – Craft brewers are becoming increasingly concerned that their access to cans, the most cost-effective form of packaging, might be tightening, THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER – QUICK HITS up. According to Forbes, craft brewers balked when two of the three top can producers, Rexam and Ball, merged earlier this year.  And now the third biggest producer, Crown Holdings is reportedly “dropping both new and existing customers using either or both 12oz and 16oz cans; and it is lengthening lead times to as long as 18 months, when available at all.”

Red River Mans Up (Shreveport, LA) – Red River Brewing has announced that they’ve got their man! Steve Parkshas accepted the position of Production Brewer and will relocating his family to the historic Shreveport later this year.
