The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – May 12, 2014

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – May 12, 2014We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

We Have SAVORed (Washington, DC) – This weekend (and week, for that matter) was truly one to remember, thanks to SAVOR’s return to DC’s National Building Museum. We drank, we salon-ed, we rubbed elbows with some of craft beer’s biggest names, and we ate more cheese than we had any right to. A big thanks to the Brewers Association for having us out – it’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience, and we’re already looking forward to next year!

Marky Mark Taking on the Funky Brew (Cambridge, MA) – First, let us apologize for that headline. We shuddered too. Now that that’s out of the way, Mark Wahlberg has another reality show – a pilot called “The Big Brew Theory,” which follows 4 MIT grads who want to start a brewery. Well, I think Mark said it best: “I have more money now than I know what to do with.”

NPR Tackles the Term “Craft Beer” – It’s a constant question from industry folks and fans alike: What is Craft Beer? It’s almost like the age-old questions: “What is art?” or “If a tree falls in the forest…?” or “How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?” Well, NPR recently wrote up a piece discussing what craft beer means now that some Brewers Association rules have changed. While we think the phrase may be subjective, the world of beer doesn’t. What do you think? What is craft beer?

Was Someone Drinking a Draft During the NFL Draft? – College football Quarterback Johnny Manziel has been much maligned for his “I want to be a superstar” attitude, and he may have felt a bit of comeuppance as he plummeted in the draft. So why wouldn’t he have a drink while waiting for his name to be called? Well, according to the Internet, he had a beer. While this turned out to be Photoshop, we just want to know why he would choose a Bud Light. Come on, artists! The guy is a superstar, at least doctor in a good beer.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – May 12, 2014Beers, Bikes, and Can Racing? (Seattle, WA) – Thursday marked the start of Seattle Beer Week. While only a week in name, Seattle Beer Week is actually 10 days of brews, bacon, and bikes. That’s right, Saturday included the annual Tour de Pints, a cycling tour of some of the area’s most well-known breweries. Organized by Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery, the Tour de Pints brings together a bunch of people on 2 wheels to tour the city’s brewers. What could be better than that? How about racing beer cans Cub Scout-style? On Saturday, the Pine Box hosted a can derby, complete with very professional rules and regulations. Seattle Beer Week continues through May 18.
