The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – January 6, 2014

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – January 6, 2014Boston Beer to Upgrade its Pennsylvania Operation (Boston, MA) – The Boston Beer Company announced last week that they’ll be investing $120 million to upgrade the Samuel Adams brewery in Lehigh Valley, PA. According to Lehighvalleylive.com, plans include “new aging and fermentation tanks that will increase production and add jobs.”

Ancient Egyptian Brewer’s Tomb Discovered (Egypt) – A beautiful tomb of a legendary Egyptian brewer has been found on the west bank of the Nile. According to National Geographic , it “belonged to Khonso Im-Heb, who was head of granaries and beer-brewing for the worship of the Egyptian mother goddess, Mut.” Unfortunately, no cellared ancient ales were entombed, which is a bummer since they would have been aging for more than three thousand years!

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – January 6, 2014Philly Beer Week Head Walks (Philadelphia, PA) – The executive director of America’s oldest and most popular beer week, Philly Beer Week (which runs May 30th – June 8th this year), has stepped down. Philly.com is reporting that Donald Russell was unable to come to terms on his salary for what had become his full-time job with the event’s board of directors.

Half The U.S. Gets To Enjoy The Latest “Enjoy By” (Escondido, CA) – The latest rollout for Stone Brewing’s popular fresh IPA series Enjoy By 02.14.14 IPA will also be their biggest. This edition of ‘Enjoy By’ is shipping this week and hitting retail next week. Twenty-eight lucky states are included in this week’s shipments.

BrewDog Beers Burgled in Brazen Midnight Heist! (Billericay, UK) – The Southend Standard is reporting A 10 STRONG gang of highly organized criminals spent two hours removing about 16,000 bottles of Brew Dog beers from the Ales by Mail warehouse in the United Kingdom. The brands of BrewDog beers stolen include 4,500 bottles of Interstellar, 1,700 of Moshi Moshi, 4,500 of Hobo Top, and 5,300 bottles of Brixton Porter – so be super attentive for criminal elements at your next bottle share!

20 New Breweries to Open in Mile High City in 2014 (Denver, CO) – Portland, Oregon better keep its eye on The Mile High City, because there are so many new breweries springing up within Denver’s city limits that they might eventually challenge Portlandia’s vaunted “city with the most breweries” title. In a recent article, Café Society (who does a great job of covering Denver’s craft beer scene by the way) noted that by the end of 2013, there were 29 breweries within the city’s limits. And with the addition of 20 more new breweries scheduled to open this year, that overall number could be as high as 50 by the end of 2014!
