Yikes, 2016 is almost over…and clearly the craft beer biz isn’t slowing down anytime soon. But no worries, Rumor Mill is always on the case, keeping you plugged in into all the beer news and lifestyle that matters. Plus we’ve an all-important update on what we’ve been drinking lately and you don’t want to miss that!
Locals Bitter Over More Expensive Bitters (London, UK) – Starting in 2017 London’s already pricey “pint” will reportedly get pricier due to the enactment of a new tax on beer. According to CVS, a respected research firm, Londoners will see a 10% to 12% increase in the cost of those pints but noted that some pubs (not the ones that we frequent) could see a boost as high as 40% to the cost of that beer.
Craft Beer Now Impacting Traditional British Brewers (United Kingdom) – We’ve been touting the UK’s growing craft beer scene for years. But now craft beer’s success is reportedly putting the squeeze on Britain’s mid-sized traditional brewers such as Moorhouse’s, Black Sheep and Camerons who find themselves now competing with craft for space at the bar. According to the Financial Times, many of the smaller craft breweries are benefitting from start-up friendly tax breaks not afforded the mid-sized traditional breweries already reeling from craft beer’s growing popularity
Words To Drink By (Los Angeles, CA) – “If you think the NFL is forever, you’ve probably had a concussion.” Bob Lefsetz – Music Industry Writer and Analyst
Devils Backbone Sees Spirits (Lexington, VA) – Flush with AB-InBev cash, Devils Backbone is getting into the spirits biz and they’ve begun construction on a $3 million distillery in Nelson County. Other upgrades include the hiring of a dozen more brewers for Jason Oliver to now boss around.
Yeast Affection (Asheville, NC) – White Labs, the largest source of brewers yeast in the nation, will be opening an East Coast outlet in North Carolina’s burgeoning beer mecca of Asheville that’s reportedly scheduled to open on January 16th.
What We’ve Been Drinking Lately (Washington, DC) – Lakewood Brewing just sent us a very special release that’s not going to make it to New Years Eve. One of our absolute favorites Lakewood’s 2016 Bourbon Barrel Temptress is an exquisite 11% ABV Imperial Milk Stout aged for almost 7 months in bourbon barrels from Breckenridge Distillery in Colorado.
