Pot vs Craft Beer (Boulder, CO) – Justin Kendall at Brewbound recently created a viral storm with his story reporting that “beer volumes were declining in markets where recreational cannabis is now legal.” But Bart Watson, the Brewers Association’s Chief Economist, is not so sure that the analysis by Cowen and Company truly captures what’s going on.
The “take away” from the initial report was that beer sales were down in the three western states where recreational marijuana can now be legally sold (Colorado, Oregon and Washington). But Watson who delves deeper into the data in Marijuana and the Beer Industry remains undecided.

Famed Field Museum Collaborates On A Dinosaur-Themed Craft Beer (Illinois) – Chicago’s legendary Field Museum, home to the skeletal remains of a T Rex they’ve nicknamed Sue (!), is reportedly collaborating with Iowa-based Toppling Goliath Brewing (who’ve also already brew a beer that features the dinosaur Sue) on a new beer to be served at the museum in January.
More “Craft Beer Crime” Fallout (Boston, MA) – It appears that there’s more legal action in store for the Craft Brewers Guild (CBG) who were recently found guilty in the Massachusetts “pay-to-play” scandal. The Brewers Association is reporting that “importer Shelton Brothers has filed suit in Massachusetts against the CGB, seeking to recover the value of lost sales they incurred because of the distributor’s actions.
What We’ve Been Drinking Lately (Washington, DC) – Ipswich Ale recently sent us a winter-sized seasonal release and we nailed it like maniacs last night. Ipswich Rt. 1A Double IPA is an aggressively hopped, yet dangerously drinkable, 8.2% India Pale Ale that’s pumped out of its mind on Ahtanum, Amarillo and Mandarina hops.
