Time to call in sick and plan your road trip to beautiful Boulder, Colorado because it’s Avery’s 30th anniversary and they are pulling out all the stops.

Here’s the deal…

I think it’s safe to say that that many of the established beer festivals have lost their luster in this post-pandemic world, too much of the same old, same old and too many hazy IPAs served up by detached volunteers.

But Avery Brewing’s annual Invitation has long been an earth-shaking classic, and it still is, the kinda beer event we all used to build a vacation around.

Conceptually, the Invitational is brilliant. All the brewers attending are friends of Avery and being invited to the event serves as an unspoken endorsement of what they’re all doing…Like Firestone Walker’s also terrific invitational it’s the Coachella for craft brewers – you don’t get onstage unless you’ve something special going on.

On July 29 over sixty breweries will be pouring at the Avery Invitational, including Italy’s Ca’ del Brado, Brazil’s Japas Cervejaria and Colorado favorites like Our Mutual Friend and WeldWerks.

To celebrate the brewery’s 30th Anniversary Avery will be releasing an event beer called 30 and it to sounds like beer worth travelling for…

“The concept was [using] an amalgamation of different ingredients that have been important to us throughout the course of thirty years of doing business,” founder Adam Avery told Westword…“The beer uses malts like Special B, which play an important role in Avery’s legendary high-alcohol, gold foil-topped beers, as well as hops like Simcoe, which is used in Maharaja, and Columbus, which is used in Hog Heaven.”

The 15% ABV Strong Ale was aged in Stranahan’s whiskey barrels and it promises to be an epic send-off to the kind of beer event there are less and less of. “The idea was to have equal parts of all these components,” says Avery. “You’ll smell and taste the malts, hops and barrel.”

On the more approachable side the Avery staff has also come with three special event-only beers: a Schwarzbier, a rice lager and a cherry-coconut IPA.

“It’s been thirty years since Dad and I opened the doors,” Avery added and there was no better way to celebrate than by inviting some of the brewery’s best friends and throwing a spectacular party.

So yeah….Road Trip!
