Oregon Bans CBD-Infused Beer

(Gone, Baby, Gone)

With the U.S Food and Drug Administration announcing that there is too little data is available to deem CBD safe for human consumption, Oregon has moved to prohibit the sale of CBD-infused alcohol products in the new year.

As Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) spokesman Matthew Van Sickle explained to the Oregon Public Broadcasting, “that’s because CBD-infused drinks aren’t federally legal under the U.S Food and Drug Administration.”

“CBD, which stands for Cannabidiol, is the non-intoxicating component of the cannabis plant, normally derived from hemp,” the Willamette Week astutely reported.

CBD doesn’t get you high, but advocates argue that it has all kinds of health benefits including pain relief.

Unfortunately starting on Jan 1, those who consider Oregon’s ban a pain, will no longer be able to ease that pain with any CBD-infused alcohol products…

In late November, the FDA concluded that the agency didn’t have the data to deem CBD safe for human consumption. Van Sickle says the OLCC is using federal caution to guide its own policies…

, Oregon Bans CBD-Infused Beer“This order clarifies that the OLCC has the ability to act on this now. We are not coming out and saying you can’t put CBD in anything. We’re saying there needs to be a bit more caution about what goes into a product.”

The most common CBD-infused alcoholic beverage in the state is beer, but CBD beer products in Oregon remain limited. The first to enter the market was Coalition Brewing’s Two Flowers IPA, but that brewery shut down earlier this year.

Van Sickle says the amount of producers and bars selling CBD-infused drinks are “still the minority,” but concedes it’s been a recently growing trend.

Other products that are CBD-infused, including chocolate, water and dog food (!), fall under the jurisdiction of the Oregon Department of Agriculture and are still available for sale.

Obscuring things even further is the fact that recreational cannabis which is legal in Oregon, is overseen by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission who just pulled the plug on CBD-infused alcohol products!

So as things stand now you can smoke pot till you’re senseless in the “Beaver State” but Oregonian’s looking for a little CBD pain relief in 2020 will have to look beyond beer and maybe opt a Cannabidiol candy bar instead.
