So many beers, So little time…With so many craft breweries, releasing so many beers, we thought it might help to provide a weekly update on all the new beers that are hitting the streets. So welcome to this week’s edition of Newbies – your guide to great new craft beer releases!
A Beer Made for Pearing (Portland, OR) – Widmer Brothers Brewing has released a filtered American-style wheat beer brewed with Oregon pears as the official beer of this year’s Bon Appétit presents Feast Portland: A Celebration of Oregon Bounty, a four-day festival celebrating Oregon’s culinary culture with top Oregon chefs. Krystal Pear will be available only in the Portland market for a limited time, now through the end of Feast Portland, which runs from September 19-22.
Bitches Brew Soon (Milton, DE) – One of our favorite releases from the Dogfish Head Brewery is their limited-edition analog homage to one of Miles Davis’s greatest albums. The 9% ABV Bitches Brew fuses three threads of imperial stout and one thread of honey beer with gesho root to create a stout as unique as that master’s jazz.
900 Pounds of Hops! (Portland, OR) – That’s the incredible amount of fresh hops that BridgePort Brewing Company used in the making of their newest release. BridgePort Hop Harvest is a double fresh-hopped 8% ABV Imperial Pilsner brewed using fresh green hops picked straight from the field. And it’s out there now, so you know what to do.
Angel City Bottles (Los Angeles, CA) – Good news from La-La Land. Angel City, who has been selling beer to local bars and restaurants for more than a year now, is now bottling two of their flagships. Eureka! Wit is their popular Belgian Wit brewed with a citrusy hop finish. Angeleno IPA is a bold, copper-hued American Pale Ale known for its grapefruit hop flavors and aroma.
Harvest Time at Half Moon (Half Moon Bay, CA) – It’s closing in on pumpkin-picking time up in Northern California, and the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company will celebrate it with a special seasonal. Mavericks Pumpkin Harvest Ale is their amber ale brewed using more than 120 pounds of locally grown, roasted and spiced Sugar Pie pumpkins. This special 5.5% ABV seasonal will be available September through November at Half Moon Bay Brewing.
Ruby / Ruby / Ruby (Phoenix, AZ) – Local homebrewers and craft beer experts James Swann, Andrew Bauman, and Landon Evans teamed up with the Williams, Arizona-based Grand Canyon Brewing Company in August for a one-of-a-kind release. Ruby Red Pale Ale is a 5% ABV American Pale brewed using 21 lbs of ruby red grapefruit, 20 lbs of papaya, and 5 lbs of lemon! This draft-only gem is rolling out today and will soon be available at select craft beer bars across Arizona.
The Great Pumpkin Returns to Massachusetts (Cambridge, MA)- There’s no surer sign of autumn than the return of the Cambridge Brewing Company’s seminal seasonal. The Great Pumpkin Ale is legend in the Boston area and this 4.4% ABV favorite is now on draft and scheduled to hit retail as early as next week.
Holy Mole (Durango, CO) – On September 21, Ska Brewing will begin the second year of its Seasonal Stout program–featuring a different canned stout released near the equinox or solstice of each of the four seasons–with the release of their chili-peppered Autumnal Molé Stout. The series will continue as it did last year, with the release of the other three stouts in the series: Hibernal Vinifera Stout on the winter solstice, and the Vernal Minthe Stout and Estival Cream Stout in 2014.
