Your ‘National Beer Day’ Cheat Sheet

April 7th is National Beer Day. And to ensure that you’re up to speed on all thing’s beer, we’ve a handy beer cheat sheet with some stats from Nielsen and the Brewers Association, so you can come off as an expert (rather than as just another drunk), when you’re celebrating tomorrow.

Retail Beer Sales In the US

  • Americans spent more than $34 billion on beer in the last year. To put that in perspective, those same Americans spent just over one-third as much ($12.5 billion) on water.
  • Beer, cider and flavored malt beverages posted a sales growth of 2% in the last year (and we can only hope that “flavored malt beverages’” impact on those overall numbers were minimal).
  • Cream Ales (!) were on a hot streak and up more than 372% in 2016 and they delivered an amazing $21.8 million in sales last year.
  • Flavored beer has been on a roll in recent years, and grown from just under $1.6 billion in sales back in 2013, to more than $1.9 billion last year.

Essential Craft Beer Stats

  • Craft Beer saw a dollar sales growth of 15%-18% from 2013 through early 2016. That’s well above the 1.3% – 3.5% of the overall beer category.
  • IPAs racked up more than $1 billion in sales last year alone, and continue their reign as America’s most popular craft style
  • There are currently approximately 5,300 breweries on line in America, an all-time high.
  • American craft beer exports are also showing record numbers with export sales growing an astounding $121 million in 2016
