It’s no secret that New York City is expensive, but $125 for beer? Maybe we should switch to something more affordable like cocaine…

Here’s the deal…

New York City is home to some of the highest housing costs in the world. Food costs are $150 higher that the monthly average for the rest of the nation and according to the Wall Street Journal it is also ground zero some of the priciest bottles of beer on the face of the planet.

Several NYC establishments have adopted reserve list pricing similar to wines where premium hard-to-get limited releases and even rarer imports might command more than $100 for a bottle…

Pretty Ricky’s also offers a private backroom that can be reserved for celebrating these rarities (but it will cost you extra). After all when you’re drinking some of the most expensive beer in the world why not enjoy it in an even more exclusive environment?

Also on Pretty Ricky’s reserve list is Gueuzerie Tilquin’s Oude Gueuze Tilquin à l’Ancienne offered at a more affordable $60, a New York. Flanders Red Ale’ from the Catskills Brewery for $50 and Allagash Brewery’s Bourbon barrel-aged Belgian Triple Curieux at $45 a bottle.

For many it’s not surprising that some New York bars are increasingly treating beer like fine wine. New York was home to Luksus the first restaurant awarded a Michelin star that only served beer with its cuisine.

Opened by former NOMA pastry chef Daniel Burns in 2013, Luksus closed its doors in 2016 according to the Drinks Business. However, Tørst, the attached beer bar which was originally owned by Brooklyn craft beer guru Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø, author, bar and founder of Evil Twin Brewing, remains open.

And like a growing number of upscale NYC counterparts, it’s also no stranger to $90 a bottle beers. Tørst’s extensive list currently features three beers priced at over $90 and 49 special release priced at more than $40 a bottle.
