Citing “microbiological contamination” drinks giant Diageo is recalling Guinness 0.0, its new non-alcoholic stout which launched in the United Kingdom only two weeks ago. Not the best introduction for the highly anticipated alcohol-free offering that’s been in development for over four years…

While Diageo (which owns the legendary Irish Dry Stout brand) emphasized that the beer recall was only a “precautionary measure,” it did go on to say that a microbial contamination, “may make some cans of Guinness 0.0% unsafe to consume.”

So there’s that…

The good news is that only the new 0.0% draught beer is affected, so consumers who enjoy their Guinness with mood-enhancing qualities are unaffected by the recall.

And the company has said that it was “working hard to investigate and determine the root cause,” of the contamination…

This from Guinness…

“The issue is isolated to Guinness 0.0 and does not impact any other Guinness variants or brands. Guinness 0.0 is a new product manufactured in a different way from other Guinness variants. The health and safety of our consumers is our number one priority,” the brewery said in a statement.

They use the same natural ingredients; water, barley, hops and yeast before gently removing the alcohol through a cold filtration method.

The cold filtration process allows the alcohol to be filtered out without presenting thermal stress to the beer, protecting the integrity of its taste and character. The brewers then blend and balance the flavors to ensure the distinctive flavor profile and taste characteristics of Guinness, just not the buzz.

The company added that it was hopeful of relaunching the product again soon but, “production will only recommence when we are completely satisfied that we have eliminated the root cause of the issue and the product meets the highest standards of quality that we and our Guinness drinkers expect.”
