On Thursday night, the Cleveland Browns ended an almost two-year drought with a win the New York Jets and the city celebrated with free Bud Light.
Here’s the deal….
Anheuser-Busch InBev is increasingly using its sports sponsorships to drive free media attention their way. And the world’s largest brewer generated a lot of buzz when they announced that they were installing Cleveland Browns “victory fridges” at bars around the city stocked with Bud Light that would remain locked until the struggling team gets its first regular season victory.
AB InBev’s announcement caught fire and garnered a ton of coverage “with stories running everywhere from Fortune to the Sydney Morning Herald. And one Bud Light rep told AdAge that “the stunt has earned the brand more impressions than all but three of the brand’s campaigns in the past year.”
The no-longer winless franchise almost ended its losing streak in their season opener, only to end up in a tie with divisional foes, the Pittsburgh Steelers
And on Thursday night, the Cleveland Browns, playing against the New York Jets, finally pulled off a home victory ending 635 days of pain and understandably the city went almost “Super Bowl” nuts.
“Dilly Dilly to the Cleveland fans,” Baker Mayfield, who led the Browns to the comeback win, told ESPN. “It’s not the only win we’re going to celebrate.”
Bud Light Vice President Andy Goeler was appropriately enthusiastic about the narrow 21-17 win over the Jets…
“The Browns have shown a lot of heart over the first two games of the season, so it was only a matter of time until they would pull off an epic comeback win like this”
And Cleveland fans got all the free Bud Light they wanted.
