Fake Brews! 5 Great April Fools’ Day Craft Beers

Brewers being a playful breed, seem to find new meaning every April Fools’ Day by pranking their fans with exciting new beer releases that might not be real.

And here are some of our “more damaged” favorites.

Last year, Terrapin Beer chose April Fools’ Day to announce a new spring seasonal release that would be “blanketing the shelves soon. Terrapin Gesundheit was described by the brewery as a 6.4% ABV Hefeweizen brewed with fresh Georgia pollen. Gesundheit also used locally-sourced ragweed as an adjunct grain in the malt bill, which Terrapin touted as adding a woody sweetness.

From the label: “Wheeze your way through spring with Terrapin’s Gesundheit, a Hefeweizen brewed with Ragweed and dry hopped with fresh Georgia pollen. This unfiltered ale looks reminiscent of your car windshield on a Georgia spring day, and pairs nicely with your favorite anti-histamine.

 

Stone’s April Fools’ Day Fake Beers

Stone Brewing’s, Fake Brews! 5 Great April Fools’ Day Craft Beers been pranking their fans with fake beer announcements for more than a decade now, and many of them are now classics.

In 2002, Stone stirred things up by announcing that they’d jumped on the lo-carb beer bandwagon with the release Stone Justification Ale.

In 2014 Stone announced a Stochasticity Project release that poked fun at their adventuresome alterna-brand’s unlikely choices by announcing the release of Stone Stochasticity Project Cr(HE)am Ale, the first canned beer to substitute helium for nitrogen. And this year’s April Fools’ Day fake brew, Stone Asparagus IPA, was insightfully explained by Stone’s co-founder and Executive Chairman Greg Koch this way: “It just reeks of deliciousness. And you’ll be aromatically reminded of your good choice on every visit to the bathroom. We are flushed with excitement about this one.”

Washington State-based Postdoc Brewing may have been one the first breweries to use April Fools’ Day to get a little snarky over the growing hazy New England IPA trend.
