Researchers from the University College London and the University of Gloucester are asking the United Kingdom’s beer drinkers to step up in the name of science.
Yes it’s true…beer is not just a mood-enhancing enjoyment, it’s also a research tool that will help the UK’s Royal Entomological Society collect different wasp populations for them to study.
Here’s the deal…
Beer has long been understood as a popular draw for people, but insects find it attractive as well. In fact many insects (like wasps in this case) enjoy beer so much that they’ll marinate themselves in it, until they drown.
Which helps to explain the strategy behind to The Big Wasp Survey of 2017, the biggest wasp of its kind (good to know).
According to the Drinks Business, UK scientists are asking Great Britain’s citizens to turn their backyards into an open-air barrooms to help them drown wasps in the name of science.
You see, while there are more than 1,700 craft breweries currently operating in the UK, there’s well over 9,000 different kinds of wasps in Great Britain…
And the public’s help in collecting them will aid researchers in their quest to learn more about the size of the species, where each family lives, and how to better protect them (that is, after you drown them).
And while we applaud the Royal Entomological Society efforts, we’d like to see them expand their study in more meaningful ways (at least to our readers).
Address the tough questions while you’re at it, like which beer styles do these wasps prefer?
Might a northern species be more drawn to a classic ESB over the dry stout? Lagers or ales…where do wasps come down?
And while we’re assuming that every wasp population gravitates towards IPAs …but how do they feel about sours?
Bottom line…the beer drinking public will be more than willing to do their part in supporting your wasp research, as long as you’re including the more the serious questions. Questions that matter to all of us…
