But Utah doesn’t have an official beer and Budweiser wants the “King of Beers” to be crowned that…complete with its own red, white and blue commemorative can which features things like snowboarding, the Capitol and the Mormon Temple.
And to argue its case Anheuser-Busch, home to Budweiser has released this humorous video featuring “Jed, the Utah storekeeper” and several Utahan athletes, including American freestyle skier Joss Christensen and former Real Salt Lake soccer goalkeeper Nick Rimando.
If you’re wondering why Utah? (We did) the press release we received explained that it’s to commemorate Budweiser’s first foray into the state after it increased the allowable alcohol content for beers to be sold in grocery stores from 3.2% to 5% back in November 2019.
As part of Anheuser-Busch’s “official beer” pitch, Budweiser is asking its fans to tag “Bud4Utah” on social media. And if 84,899 tags are logged (that’s the number of square feet of Utah by the way), the state will get its own specially-designed Utah Budweiser can.
But even if this campaign proves successful, the Salt Lake Tribune thinks the special can could be problematic…
“Budweiser might get pushback from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for having its iconic temple on the product. And the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, which approves all names and labels, has typically rejected such depictions, saying they are disrespectful toward the faith, whose members are taught to abstain from alcohol.”
