Beer price surveys are a dime a dozen. They populate an internet fueled by the need for endless content, no matter how questionable they might be.

But that doesn’t mean that beer surveys can’t be a fun and diverting, especially when it’s summer and you’re thinking about getting away…

For a new study, long-haul specialists Travelbag analyzed the average cost of a beer, Instagram hashtag data, as well as the average temperature in summer, across 100 cities to reveal the best places for a beer this season.

The five cheapest US cities for beer

Rank City CountryCost of a beer (US $) Average temperature in summer (F)
1 New Orleans $4.72 81.8
2 Dallas $4.97 85.4
3 Baltimore $4.97 80
4 Las Vegas $4.97 90.2
5 Salt Lake City $5.46 74.6

And here are some stats from Travelbag’s data:

  • With beers costing under $5, New Orleans is the US city with the cheapest beer.
  • Dallas follows in second, where a cold one costs $4.97 on average.
  • Looking much further afield, Nanjing (China) is home to the world’s cheapest beer at $0.70 on average, and it’s only $0.68 more in Shanghai and Beijing.
  • In both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, it can cost nearly $13.00 on average per beer, so avoid those two cities like the plague, if beer is an important part of your travel plans

Chicago claims the top spot as the best city to enjoy a beer in summer. The hashtag #chicagobeer has been used over 148K times – the highest out of all cities. For the bar-hopping visit Logan Square, home to some of Chicago’s best restaurants and bars, as well as Solemn Oath Brewery, an American Craft Beer fav.

Hanoi comes in second, and although the number of Instagram hashtags is lower (11,785), the city offers the second-cheapest pints out of all cities analyzed, priced at just £0.67. Only Nanjing in China beats this with a cost of £0.55. Be sure you try Bia Hoi, a popular draught beer in Vietnam, found on street corners and in small bars.

The Indonesian capital, Jakarta, rounds off the top three, with wonderfully hot temperatures between June and August. These are also some of the best months to visit the city, as the weather is very dry. And while Bali is a popular destination,  Jakarta offers plenty of museums and cultural sights to explore. Its excellent transportation system will allow you to easily navigate the city while stopping at various places for an affordable pint.  Indonesia’s most popular beer is Bintang, so make sure to give it a try.
