The beer biz never sleeps at American Craft Beer. And here’s just some of what’s been happening while you were drinking your way through the weekend.

Anchor Beer Sales Spike As Brewery Closes

It’s not surprising but still kinda sad that Anchor Beer sales are booming now that brewery has closed.

On July 12 Anchor Brewing, which is now owned by Japanese beer giant, announced it was closing and San Francisco locals have flooded retail and are buying as much of their beers as they can get their hands on.

Too little too late? It’s all too predictable.

At Rainbow Grocery Cooperative in San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood, alcohol buyer Michael Miller said that they’ve noticed a spike in people purchasing Anchor beer.

“People know it’s going away so they’re buying it,” Miller told SFGATE. “By the time you print this, we probably won’t have any.”

Coit Liquors manager Michael Reynolds said they’ve seen so much demand for Anchor beer that they are limiting customers to two six-packs each. “I sold out yesterday and I ordered all that I could for delivery today,” Reynolds said. “It’s probably going to be gone by the end of the weekend.”

Words to Drink By

“In times like this, when things get divisive and controversial so easily, I think it’s an important wake-up call to all of us marketers to be very humble.” Anheuser-Busch Chief Marketing Officer Marcel Marcondes on the Bud Light Trans controversy

Molson Coors Updates Pan-Asian Food Beer

If you’re not familiar with Molson Coors’ Cobra Beer, you wouldn’t be alone. It’s not sold in the US but is one of the UK’s most popular beers having alreday won 121 Gold & Grand Gold medals.

Founded in 1989 just outside Fulham in London this beer was designed specifically to be consumed with food. Its founder Lord Karan Bilimoria (!) wanted to create a beer that would not leave people feeling bloated if they drank it while eating a curry.

Cobra Beer is “brewed to sit neatly between a lager and an ale” and according to Molson Coors who own the popular brand, “the beer’s distinctive low carbonation and smoothness makes it the perfect accompaniment to dishes from around the world.”

With that in mind, Molson Coors has changed things up with a new ‘graffiti style’ can design that speaks to Great Britain’s “changing consumer tastes.”

Responding to a recent national survey led by research company Opinium, Molson Coors learned that “61% of 18–34 year olds now reported that they were adventurous in trying new cuisines.” And Molson Coors’ new can artwork “echoes the demand for contemporary cuisines and dishes that Cobra is designed to accompany – such as Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Turkish, Lebanese, and Sri Lankan food”.
