Things got ugly last week for Dutch brewing giant Heineken. We’ve that, the world’s coldest beer festival, and more.
Heineken Boycotted Over Broken Promise to Withdraw From Russia
More than 10,000 people took to twitter on Feb 24th calling for a boycott of Dutch beer company Heineken, over what they perceived as the company having broken a promise.
In March 2022 Heineken “had vowed to pull its business from Russia after the country invaded Ukraine. But according to The Street “an investigative report from Netherlands-based website Follow the Money states that the company’s reports showed its Russian arm “launched 61 new products ‘in record time’ and sold 720,000 hectoliters more beer and soft drinks.”
Heineken was quick to respond to the controversy in a formal statement…
“We’re working hard to transfer our business to a viable buyer in very challenging circumstances and we expect at a significant financial loss to the company, amounting to around €300M. In the meantime, our local colleagues at Heineken Russia are doing what they can to keep the business going, after fully delisting the Heineken brand, to avoid nationalization and ensure their livelihoods are not at risk.”

World’s Coldest Beer Festival Returns to Michigan
The Michigan Brewers Guild threw one their biggest (and definitely their coldest) events of the year last weekend when the 17th annual Winter Beer Festival returned to Fifth Third the LMCU Ballpark.
More than 5000 beer lovers weathered the cold, many in their finest winter gear and eccentric costumes as they enjoyed any number of the 718 beers offered by the 120 breweries that participated this year.
Formed in 1997, the Michigan Brewers Guild , who’ve been putting on this classic beer fest since 2006, represent nearly 300 member breweries with the mission of promoting and protecting the Michigan beer industry to help locally brewed beer attain 20% of all beer sales in the state by 2025.
