Beer Sales in Delhi India Drop 52%
Delhi, India’s capital territory, is a massive metropolitan area that’s populated by some of the country’s most committed beer lovers. But a perfect storm of circumstances has significantly impacted regional beer sales in Delhi this May.
The Times of India cited multiple reasons for the decline, including less beer variety at retail outlets, the result of companies diverting products to other states in India with higher profit margins due increased excise taxes that took effect in late 2022.
Policy changes which came into force in the middle of 2022 have shrunk beer sales by almost half, the news outlet has said. One liquor company official even told the newspaper that consumers living closer to the border choose to buy beer in other states due to the low availability.
Delhi’s excise rules force breweries to charge the least for their beers in India and companies are responding to that dictate by shipping their product to to higher-margin states, further reducing stocks within Delhi.

California Brewing Legend Found Dead At 48 in India
Matt Walsh, a San Diego beer icon was found dead last month in his hotel room in India. He was only 48. A New York transplant Walsh was a brewing legend in San Diego where he worked with some of the region’s biggest names, including Modern Times Beer, AleSmith Brewing and Karl Strauss.
Walsh, who traveled the world as a younger man in the navy, had been brewing in Asian locations since 2017 and he had recently been hired by The Pump House Brewery in Bengaluru, India.
“The cause of death? That’s still unclear,” according to the San Diego Union-Tribune “although foul play was not suspected” “
He’s a legend,” said Shawn Steele, a friend and director of brewing operations for Thorn Brewing told the newspaper. “He’s responsible for all the original Modern Times beers.”
