Brewery Leak Turns Seawater Blood Red in Japan

Visitors to a beach resort city on the island of Okinawa, Japan’s fifth largest island and a destination renowned for its crystal-clear waters, were shocked to discover that the sea had turned blood red when they woke on June 27,  thanks to a local brewery leak.

“We believe it was caused by the leakage of propylene glycol – a food additive listed in enforcement regulations of the Food Sanitation Act – contained in cooling water used to cool our factory facilities,” Orion Breweries said. “The leaked cooling water flowed into a river through a rain gutter, causing the sea to turn red.”

According to the brewery the leak had been “plugged by 9:30 Tuesday morning. But a spokesperson for the Japanese Coast Guard told CNN “the seawater near the brewery was still red as of Wednesday morning.”

Orion Breweries apologized for causing “inconvenience and enormous trouble and worry” and added that it had launched an investigation into the incident and was working with authorities to take “counter measures.”
