More Hoops For Utah Brewers To Jump Through (Salt Lake City, UT) – We’re not sure if Utah is the most regulatory backward state in the union, but they sure make it difficult for craft brewers to their thing.

Utah Brewers, who already have to navigate myriad liquor restrictions, were given one more state mandate recently… alcohol testing for all the new 3.2 beers they produce according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Utah’s Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control decreed that all new beer sold in Utah grocery and convenience stores, must first be tested in a state laboratory to ensure the brews do not exceed the state limit of 4 percent alcohol by volume (3.2% by weight). That’s right, if brewers want to sell their beers in convenience and grocery stores in Utah, they need to send it to a special state lab to be approved.

Alcohol-content tests are also required for any beer that is sold at production facilities. Brewers can’t sell any beers stronger than 4% ABV in their taprooms. According to Utah ABC regulations. Beers stronger than that can only be sold is the state’s liquor stores.

Words To Drink By (Boulder, CO) – “This is something that would not fly in many states, as it puts an undue burden on the smallest breweries that have the least amount of sales.” Paul Gatza, Director at Brewers Association
