Beer Buzz – Female Beer Attitudes, Allagash Founder Rob Tod Wins James Beard Award

allagash, Beer Buzz – Female Beer Attitudes, Allagash Founder Rob Tod Wins James Beard AwardWomen Want Beer To Reimage Itself (UK) – Dea Latis, a women and beer interest group, has released a new study called the Beer Agender  which reports  “that women would switch to beer if it wasn’t associated with pints, bloating and sexist imagery,” according to Beer Today.

Here are study’s key findings

  • The image of beer and its advertising is often associated with beer-swilling men in pubs and that needs to change
  • The typical female beer drinker is someone who doesn’t care too much about what other people think of her, or is a woman who doesn’t care too much about what she thinks of herself
  • Beer’s bloat factor is a major consideration, and feeling tight across the belly and burping is a big barrier to drinking beer on a night out
  • Women definitely don’t want a ladies-only beer and want to move beyond volume to focus more on beautiful glassware and lighter, more golden beers
  • Women prefer tastings with glasses and packages of beer that are smaller than a half pint, but with more interest and more flavors
  • Food with beer is an attractive proposition for women but they need to taste, sample, inspire and entice

Words to Drink By (London) – “This report is important for the health and growth of the beer industry in the UK. There is a huge amount of work for the beer industry to do to overcome outdated stereotypes facilitated by decades of damaging advertising.” Jaega Wise, Head Brewer / Wild Card Brewing

Rob Tod (Allagash Facebook)

Allagash Brewing’s Rob Tod Wins James Beard Award (Portend, ME) – Allagash Brewing founder industry pioneer Rob Tod has been named a James Beard Award winner. The awards, considered to be the Oscars of the culinary world, celebrate the country’s best and brightest food and drink professionals in a number of categories.

On Monday Night At The Chicago  Opera House Tod was named Outstanding Wine, Spirits or Beer Producer, which is given in recognition of a producer “who demonstrates consistency and exceptional skill in his or her craft.” And we’ll drink to that.

What We’ve Been Drinking Lately (Denver, CO) – Seedstock Brewery has been releasing some incredible beers this year (a gruit no-hops beer, a Grand Marnier-aged beer and more) and we just hit up something new from them that’s impressive. Often compared to the German Märzen style, Seedstock Polotmavý is a 5.3% ABC crisp and dry Czech style Amber Lager that straddles the boundaries of light and dark beer.
