Breakroom Brewery crowlers

Yikes, June already…and clearly the craft beer biz isn’t slowing down any time soon. But no worries, the Beer Buzz is always on the case, keeping you up on all the beer news and lifestyle that matters. Plus we’ve an all-important update on what we’ve been drinking lately and you don’t want to miss that!

Are Crowlers Killing Off Growlers? (USA) – The short answer is absolutely and it’s happening fast! Remember when retail growler stations were the ‘new, next big thing?’ Not anymore. With the introduction of those shiny, oversized cans even the best designed growlers are now gathering dust in the basement.

Crowlers, a hybridized marriage ‘can’ and ‘growler’ was first introduced in 2014. And not surprisingly Oskar Blues, who single-handedly heralded in craft beer in cans revolution, was part of that introduction in partnership with Ball packaging company.

The 32-ounce crowler which remains a trademark of Ball is quite simply a more efficient way to package fresh beer. Increasingly embraced by brewery taprooms they can be easily filled and sealed…and are fast sending the growler the way of the fax machine.

They are closing their first London bar which sold their brand exclusively in favor of a new brewpub located in London’s busy Shoreditch neighborhood not that far from the city’s Hackney and Bethnal Green neighborhoods, both bigtime craft beer destinations.

Part of a new London strategy, which also involves the purchase of Camden Town Brewery in December of 2015, the new brewpub venue “was acquired in February by Anheuser Busch-InBev’s investment arm ZX Ventures, which operates in the UK under the Pioneer Brewing Company brand according to GBH.
