From the nation’s coolest beer events to movies, music and cutting edge TV – we’ve got your back big-time. Plus we’ve another weekend beer suggestion for you as well, because we know you’ll be drinking.
NFL Super Bowl 51 (Houston, TX) – NRG Stadium, 6:30 pm EST on FOX. Well it’s the New England Patriots (again) up against a very good Atlanta Falcons. Are they good enough? The bookies don’t think so (and neither do we) but we just hope the game’s competitive and that commercials are fun.
What won’t be fun is the Lady Gaga half-time show…what the hell were they thinking?
Taking Beer To Dangerous Extremes (Boston, MA) – One of the craft beer industry’s most extreme celebrations is taking place this weekend and authorities are on “high” alert (so think Uber). That’s because “the bros” are presenting their 14th annual Extreme Beer Fest tonight and tomorrow (Feb 3rd-4th) and it doesn’t appear that the police can stop them! Returning to the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston, this year’s two-day three-session beerganza will feature an expanded selection of more than 250 “extreme” beers from over 70 of this country’s most lawless breweries, so just plan to pass out. On The Big Screen – There was a time when M. Night Shyamalan was considered to be the next Stephen Spielberg. But that was before all his movies turned to shit and he completely lost his way as a director. But his early films like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable were so remarkably brilliant that we keep rooting for him where most have had the good sense to stop. And as his recent foray into television, Wayward Pines was surprisingly good and 2015’s The Visit well received, we’re hoping his newest film Split (about a kidnapper wit 23 distinct personalities) is better than it sounds.
Hoosier Mama? (Indianapolis, IN) – The Brewers of Indiana Guild’s 9th annual Winterfest returns to the West Pavilion on the Indiana State Fairgrounds this Saturday, February 4th and it’s absolutely not to be missed. This year’s cold-weather celebration will feature hundreds of beers from 101 of the region’s best breweries, so you should have enough to drink. TV Time – If you’re a Weekend Pick regular you know we’ve had good things to say about The Affair and about Homeland both of which have returned to the Showtime network for another season. But as good as these dramas have proven to be in the past, we worry that both may peaked this season. When The Affair adds a sadistic prison guard into what was basically a story about the domestic consequences of infidelity, we worry. When Homeland’s Carrie Mathison starts defending “possible terrorists” from an evil FBI we worry more.
THE ACB WEEKEND BEER PICK
We decided to step away from the obvious beers of the season and hit up something unlikely from Schlafly Beer this weekend. Sporting an almost summertime crispness and a relatively low ABV, Schlafly White Lager is a 5.5% Zwickelbier, an unfiltered style with a strong malt-backbone that dates back to the Middle Ages.
