THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER – QUICK HITS

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourself.

, THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER – QUICK HITSTerrapin Beer Sells Out (Athens, Ga) – The craft beer division of MillerCoors Tenth & Blake which in 2010 secured a 25% minority stake in Terrapin Beer quietly sealed the deal the deal last week and SOLD OUT to Big Beer. In an exercise clearly designed to downplay the fact that one of the South’s earliest and most influential craft brewers had basically sold out to what will eventually become the biggest brewer in the world, the announcement of the purchase first appeared on the MillerCoors site last Wednesday. More than two days later Terrapin quietly confirmed via their Facebook page, what many fans feared, that they had in fact SOLD OUT to THE MAN.

Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine Will Release New Beer (Quebec, Canada) – Megadeath’s Dave Mustaine is reportedly preparing to launch an exclusive beer in partnership with noted Canadian craft brewer Unibroue. Mustaine’s forthcoming release, Tout Le Monde, is a sessionable 4.5% ABV Belgian-style Saison Ale that, we’re assuming, will be rocking!

Words To Drink By (Miami, FL) – “Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.”

Dave Barry – American Author and Humorist

When Not As Bad Is Good (Boston, MA) – The second largest craft brewer in the country Boston Beer, recently announced their quarterly earnings and the results were less than stellar. Yet in spite of this embattled company’s overall decline of 4%, their stock price was surging an amazing 17% last Thursday. You see according to Forbes, analysts were expecting even bigger losses…so this quarterly loss was seen as a win and the beginning of a turnaround for this heritage craft operation. Who knew that bad news would be this welcome!

, THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER – QUICK HITSTröegs Opens The Doors On Their Dream Wood-Aging Space (Hershey, PA) – Tröegs Independent Craft Brewery has been exploring wood-aging ever since they introduced Scratch Beer Series and they’ve just opened the doors to their wood-aging dream space. Built as the brewery’s new home for wild yeast and a creative cellaring, The Splinter Cellar is dominated by three towering 9,300-gallon foeders. And to celebrate the opening, Tröegs is releasing a limited amount of Wild Elf, a Pennsylvania Wild Ale made with local cherries and the microflora that hitchhiked in with them.
