Today is a celebration of one of our most basic rights – the right to vote. And if you haven’t voted, get on it. But after you’ve voted and you’re awaiting the news as to whether your candidate won or lost, you’ll need beer. Probably many. And we’ve several appropriately themed suggestions to help you get through what could be a long night.
Ale to the Chief! Avery Brewing (Boulder, CO)
Originally brewed to celebrate Inauguration Day, back in 2009, Avery smartly elected to return this winner for a third term. In a different season this enormous 8.1% ABV Pale Ale would be rightfully referred to as an “Imperial.” But the presidency, as first conceived by our founders, was designed to be the antithesis of anything imperial, so the brewery has designated Avery Ale to the Chief! As a Presidential Pale Ale instead.
General Washington’s Tavern Porter – Yards Brewing (Philadelphia, PA)
Inspired by an original recipe that was in a letter that General George Washington sent to his officers near the end of the Revolutionary War, General Washington’s Tavern Porter is a smooth, dark and robust 7% ABV Philadelphia-style Porter – and a righteous tribute to the father of our country.
Brew Free! Or Die IPA – 21st Amendment Brewing (San Leandro, CA)
Happily available all year round, so you can celebrate (or drown your sorrows) well after today’s presidential elections. 21st Amendment Brew Free! Or Die IPA is a largely available and unabashedly nationalistic 7% ABV West Coast-style India Pale Ale that takes your freedom to choose very seriously.
Partisan Picks
Chill Clinton – Exile Brewing Company (Des Moines, IA)
Brewed in 2015 and actually referencing Bill more directly than Hillary. Chill Clinton is described as a Double Hemp Amber Ale that may hint at her politics should Hilary be elected. Even more interesting is the fact that she picked up a 4-pack when she came through town.
Bernie Weisse – Zero Gravity Craft Brewery (Burlington, VT)
We know that he didn’t make it beyond the primaries, but Bernie Sanders’ presence is still being felt in this election and we agree with Vermont-based Zero Gravity Brewery that the dude’s earned an Election Day beer… even if he didn’t make to the finals. Undoubtedly long gone with only 300 cases canned (but then again so is Bernie Sanders) Zero Gravity’s Bernie Weisse was a 3.2% tart and sour Berliner Weisse that we’ll all have to miss.
Friends Don’t Let Friends Vote Drumpf – Dock Street Brewing (Philadelphia, PA)
It’s not surprising that Donald Trump generated the largest number of themed beers (most of them taking shots at him). But whether you’re a fan or a critic you have to admit that Dock Streets’ Friends Don’t Let Friends Vote Drumpf (described as a short fingered stout) is an awesome name no matter what your party affiliation, and fitting for this sometimes surreal election season.
