Country music and beer have a long and storied relationship, but it’s not a musical genre we know all that well. So we asked a friend of ours who works in the music biz down in Nashville, (which will be home to the 2018 Craft Brewers Conference by the way), to give us “his” best country songs about beer. Turns out his list was endless – so we capped him at five.
There’s A Tear in My Beer – Hank Williams
Beer song run the gamut and just like drinking they can be a cheerful and upbeat or sad, lovesick and forlorn. And as the title would lead you to believe, this Hank Williams classic is a heartbreaker.
Beery lyric: “There’s a tear in my beer / ‘Cause I’m cryin’ for you dear
Beer for My Horses – Toby Keith w/Willie Nelson
This is a vigilante song of sorts and you gotta admit its title is oddly attention grabbing. Evidently Keith and Willie (isn’t he a pot guy?), are all pissed off at all the injustice they’re seeing on TV and they decide to take matters into their own hands.
Beery lyric: “We’ll raise up our glasses against evil forces / Singing “Whiskey for my men, Beer for my horses.”
Somebody Buy This Cowgirl a Beer – Shelly West
Turns out that men aren’t the only ones celebrating a wild night out, fueled on beer. Shelly West’s county opus to music and drinking even drops in some Americana beer slang when she orders a “Colorado Kool-Aid (aka Coors) that we’re guessing somebody else paid for.
Beery lyric: “Before I lose my self-control / I’m gonna let the good times / Somebody buy this cowgirl a beer.”
Beer Thirty – Brooks & Dunn
This Brooks & Dunn stomper, which became its own anthem a while back, does for honky-tonks and beer drinkers, what SweetWater tends to suggest with their “pot-time” referenced” 420 Extra Pale Ale.
Beery lyric: “That clock on the wall / It rings, It chimes / It’s beer thirty, somewhere / that’s honky honky-tonk time.”
Beer Money – Kip Moore
Kip Moore’s “Beer Money” views beer as a romantic mood-enhancer, that we all know it can be sometimes. And he’s willing to spend his LAST DIME on a GOOD TIME where he and his girl might “get lucky and stay out of jail,” (which is always a decent goal…don’t yah think?).
Beery lyric: “You got the kiss that tastes like honey / And I got a little beer money / So Baby, I’m buyin’ tonight”
