The State of American Craft Beer – Michigan

We've reached our 22nd state on the list, one with many nicknames including Water Wonderland, The Peninsula State, The Mitten State and the official one, The Great Lake State. Also known as "The Wolverine State," the name is rumored to have been given by either Native Americans or Ohioans due to settlers ravenous acquisition of land. The Wolverine, an intense member of the weasel family, is not at all indigenous to Michigan.

So it's only apropos that we'd be celebrating where beer in America began, Massachusetts.  The Bay State is not only where the Mayflower's crew dropped the Pilgrims off to ensure they had enough beer for the return trip, but also one of the regions that fed the rebirth of artisan brewing in the 1980's.

Somehow we've managed to tap our twentieth state on the list, The Old Line State, Maryland. One of the original 13 colonies and home to some of the first Army regiments, the state's nickname was coined by General Washington following the Maryland Line's stand at the Battle of Long Island. Due to their high quality soldiering and long service, he called them his "Old Line."
