EU Countries Brew Less Beer In 2023

The European Union is a multinational political and economic union of 27 member states, located primarily in Europe, with an estimated total population of over 449 million. And even though Europe is renowned for its rich beer heritage, it is now brewing less beer.

In 2023 the European Union (EU) produced some 34.3 billion liters of beer, but when compared to 2022, the total amount was down by around 5%.

According to EU data, Germany continued to be the top producer with 7.2 billion liters of beer, which was around a quarter (22.3%) of the total production. The Netherlands remained the top beer exporter in 2023, followed by Germany, Czechia and Ireland. The United Kingdom was the primary destination for those exports and the US was #2 reports the Drinks Business.

Craft Beer A $1.25 billion Biz in Iowa

Iowa’s craft beer industry generated a total economic impact of $1.25 billion from brewery operations, trade and tourism in 2022 and is projected to continue to grow over the next five years, according to a recent report by the Iowa Brewers Guild that was commissioned by the Iowa Economic Development Authority.

“The new economic impact report underscores what we know to be true. Iowa breweries play a critical role in cities across Iowa by not only creating jobs and economic opportunity, but also creating gathering spaces that build community,” Noreen Otto, executive director of the Iowa Brewers Guild, said in a news release.

“Iowa breweries also directly support Iowa’s agriculture industry, creating a wave of economic impact throughout our state that transcends industries.”
