The Church Brew Works Celestial Gold
American Craft Beer was recently invited to Pittsburgh to cover its amazing craft beer scene and it was there we discovered a classic from a heritage craft brewery that has inspired a whole new generation of brewers across the region. They also make a great “Dad Beer.”
Housed in what was once St. John the Baptist Church, a spectacular structure from 1902 which reopened its doors as a brewery in 2012, The Church Brew Works went on to be named best” Large Brewpub in America” at the Great American Beer Festival.
The first beer that they ever brewed, Celestial Gold is a light and refreshing 5% ABV traditional German-Style Pilsner that for many remains a near spiritual experience for many dad’s in the Pittsburgh region.
Firestone Pivo Pils
Firestone Walker’s David Walker made and interesting observation about pilsners while we were hanging with him many years back at SAVOR. He said that the industry was returning to the pilsner style because craft brewers “have finally gotten good enough at what they do to take on this difficult style with confidence.”
First introduced by the brewery in 2013, Firestone Walker’s 5.3% ABV dry-hopped ‘Germany meets California’ Pivo Pils became an immediate best-seller and one the company’s cornerstones.
And if you’re still looking for dad gift it’s now available in the Firestone 25th Anniversary Pack along with two other classics, Double Barrel Ale and Union Jack IPA.
Victory Prima Pils
Considered by many to be the “mother of the American craft beer Pilsner,” Victory Brewing’s hand-crafted Pils is one of craft beer’s earliest and most celebrated lagers. And for dad’s who are more “old-school” when it comes to beer, this is a perfect transition pilsner.
Brewed with an abundance of whole flower Hallertau, Tettnang, Saaz and Spalt Select hops and tempered by the finest German malts, Victory’s 5.3% ABV Prima Pils deserves it’s heady place in craft beer’s pilsner pantheon.
Half Acre Pony Pilsner
Chicago’s Half Acre Brewing has a well-earned rep for brewing HUGE beers and recklessly pushing boundaries. They only offer six year-round beers and we found it telling that one of them is a very traditional pilsner that could be right up dad’s alley.
With its bright aromatics, its noble spiciness, juniper botanicals, and malty chewiness, Half Acre’s 5.5% ABV Pony Pilsner is an impressively light-bodied wonder.
