Good Books – Joe Hill’s The Fireman

, Good Books – Joe Hill’s The FiremanAmerican Craft Beer delivers craft beer news, entertainment and lifestyle 24/7 and because we do, we’re occasionally sent books to review. And we recently received an apocalyptic thriller about a plague that causes people to burst into flames. And it’s an insanely good read that we couldn’t put down.

The Fireman is the fourth book by the award-winning New York Times bestselling author Joe Hill who’s made quite a name for himself in the world of supernatural fiction. This chilling novel envisions a world-wide pandemic of spontaneous combustion that threatens to burn civilization to the ground.

A terrifying plague of unknown origin that spreads like wildfire (his words, not ours) has plunged the world into darkness and flames. Boston, Detroit, Seattle, have already reduced to cinders and it’s up to a small group of infected New England survivors (led by a mysterious individual who’s been nicknamed the Fireman) to save what’s left of it.

Taking its lead from epic horror sagas like Stephen King’s The Stand , with more than a little of the Lord of the Flies’ moral metaphysics thrown in, The Fireman is first and foremost a pure entertainment that reminds you that books can be written simply to be fun.

And yes, unlike most of our Good Books reviews, Joe Hill’s The Fireman has absolutely nothing to do with beer. But paired with the right brew (we suggest a robust Smoked Porter) you’ll be drinking and turning pages like your life depended on it, late into the night.
