The American Craft Beer Weekend Picks – December 21, 2012

, The American Craft Beer Weekend Picks – December 21, 2012Hey it’s Friday and we’re heading into the weekend. With today being the “End of Times” (as predicted by the Mayan calendar), you’re probably busy saying good-bye to loved ones and haven’t given much thought to what might happen if we all do end up surviving. That’s where we come in! We’re your back-up plan and we’ve got some ideas…Plus we’ve got some “devastating” apocalyptic weekend beer picks for you too!

So welcome to the “End of Times” edition of our Weekend Picks!

The Brits have got the right idea. Unlike their Yankee brethren, they understand that no beer festival should ever have to wait on apocalyptic fears or quaint notions like Christmas. The Brits understand that the winter holidays were made for celebration (Mayans be damned!) and that’s why the only beer festival taking place this weekend is happening in Axminster, England! The inaugural Axminster Christmas Beer Festival is taking place this Saturday, December 22nd in the UK. This all-day event is being held in the historic Axminster Guildhall and will feature craft beer from some of the region’s best breweries. The bad news is you’ll have to spring for the airfare – the good news is that once you’re there, admission to the festival is free! For more info on the only beer festival on the planet that’s taking place this weekend, check out: Axminster Christmas Beer Festival

Given the unpredictable nature of today, we understand how you might just want to hunker down at the house – see how all this “end of the world” stuff plays out. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a good time and we’re thinking renting some videos might be the way to go. So here are a couple of End of the World Movies that you don’t want to miss before you’re the one who’s missed.

As far as the end of the world goes, it doesn’t get much bigger than director Roland Emmerich’s 2012, which punches a Nostradamus-style loophole in the Mayan calendar and rams the apocalypse through it. It’s gleefully stupid but also a whole lot of fun. It stars John Cusack as a man trying to rebuild his marriage while the world around him is imploding. It also stars Woody Harrelson at his over-the-top best.

If you want to go a little more “cult-ish” A Boy & His Dog should do. This 1975 flick stars Don Johnson (years before Miami Vice) as a loner named Vic who roams a post-nuclear world with his loyal dog, Blood, a remarkable hound who has the ability to communicate telepathically. It’s survival of the fittest, so food and sex are Vic’s highest priorities, and he gets plenty of both when recruited into a mysterious underground society in desperate need of young fertile males (Yes!).

Then there’s 2009’s The Road and we’ve got to tell you, the end of the world doesn’t get more depressing than this. Based on Cormac McCarthy’s equally disheartening book, The Road stars Viggo Mortensen as a father who roams a post-apocalyptic wasteland with his son, struggling to find food, evade cannibals and survive. The Road, which was nominated for all kinds of awards, is brilliant – but it’s also a buzzkill of epic proportions – so have a good time!

Our Apocalyptic Weekend Beer Picks

Tröegs just joined Airways, Elysian and a multitude of brewers who’d probably rather that we didn’t reference them, in celebrating the impending “End of the World” along with the Mayan community. And since we’re feeling totally apocalyptic today, we’re making them all our weekend beer picks…

In a last ditch effort to celebrate the end of the Mayan calendar (and possibly the world) on 12/21/12, Tröegs Brewing Company has released ¿Impending Descent? It’s a colossal Russian Imperial Stout that’s now available in 6-packs, cases, growlers and on draft.

In yet another tawdry attempt to capitalize on our demise, Airways Brewing Company is releasing the final 15 cases of its popular Final Departure Imperial Stout, ensuring the last beer you enjoy is one you’ll never forget.

And as if things weren’t already desperate enough, Elysian Brewing Company is unleashing the final beer in their 12 BEERS OF THE APOCALYPSE SERIES:: DOOM Golden Treacle Pale. Doom will be available on draft and in bottles with labels featuring the artwork of comic artist Charles Burns from his weirdly apocalyptic Black Hole series.
