THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER – QUICK HITS

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves

One Award We’re Happy We Didn’t Win (Portland, OR) – Hey we can be as politically incorrect as anyone out there, but the news that the Craft Brew Alliance , THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER – QUICK HITS(CBA) had been named “Craft Beer Company of the Year” by Hooters of America, a leading national restaurant chain that traffics in, well, “hooters,” even gave us pause. The Blue Moon people have got to be totally bummed.

Another Bick In The Wall (Toronto, Canada) – In yet another sign of AB InBev’s ongoing and worldwide campaign to coopt the craft beer movement by purchasing independents and adding them to their growing “craft beer” portfolio, Canada’s Labatt announced Friday that they had reached a purchase agreement with Mill Street Brewery, an award-winning craft brewer based in Toronto.

Words To Drink By
(Los Angeles, CA) – “Celebrity is obscurity waiting to happen.”

Carrie Fisher – Actress & Author

ACB On The Town (Washington, DC) — We’d like to thank, Steve Hindy, Sam Bernstein, Clare Dietzen and the whole Brooklyn Brewery crew, for making us so much a part of their fantastic Mash Tour which touched down in DC last week. It was seven days and nights filled with fun, food, music, industry talk (and of course serious drink) – and one of its many highlights was the State Of Craft Beer forum that we attended on Thursday night. Helmed by Brooklyn Brewery’s Co-founder and Chairman Steve Hindy. The panel discussion featured some of DC’s and our industry’s best, including DC Brau’s Jeff Hancock and Mari Rodela, NRG’s always insightful Greg Engert, Atlas Brew Works, Justin Cox and our buddy, John Holl from All About Beer. It was great night of conversation, fueled on spectacular beer and we’re not apologizing for having had too much fun.

Parade Magazine Does Craft Beer (Everywhere, USA) – We worried that craft beer might have reached a critical mainstream tipping point when we saw that Parade, the mass-produced family-friendly magazine that’s distributed in more than 700 newspapers throughout the United States, had dedicated much of last Sunday’s print publication to craft beer.
