Soccer Stars and Hollywood Collide in Michelob Ultra’s “Superior Match” Beer Ad

The FIFA World Cup 2026 games are nearing and Michelob Ultra is making a serious play for beer-loving soccer fans. The nation’s #1 bestselling beer has unveiled “The Superior Match,” a big-budget commercial packed with football stars, celebrity cameos, and enough cinematic flair to feel more like the trailer for an action movie than a traditional beer ad.

As the “Official Beer Sponsor” of the tournament across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Michelob Ultra spent some serious cash positioning itself at the center of the World Cup conversation. Parent company Anheuser-Busch InBev recently expanded its long-running partnership with FIFA, making Michelob Ultra one of the company’s biggest global brands heading into the 2026 tournament,\ which will feature 104 total matches across 39 days.

Star-Studded “Superior Match” Commercial

Created by BBDO New York and directed by Jaron Albertin, the “Superior Match,” which you can see HERE, unfolds inside an upscale hotel lobby that suddenly transforms into an improvised soccer field. The prize at the center of the chaos is a bucket of ice-cold Michelob Ultra.

The ad leans hard into the brand’s slogan, “Superior is Worth Playing For,” and the cast does plenty of the heavy lifting.

Lionel Messi headlines Team Argentina alongside Lautaro Martínez and Nico Paz. Representing the United States are Christian Pulisic, Sergiño Dest, and Antonee Robinson.

The commercial also squeezes in appearances from Alex Morgan, who delivers a timely assist, legendary Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa protecting the elevator like it’s the World Cup Final, and Brazilian icon Ronaldo Nazário joining the mayhem.

Then there’s Billy Bob Thornton, who provides the ad’s deadpan comic relief. While world-famous players battle over the beer bucket, Thornton casually informs a panicked bellhop that the room-service order everyone is fighting over actually belonged to him.

Beyond the Commercial

Michelob Ultra is also stretching the campaign far beyond a single commercial. The brand has introduced a new “Superior Player of the Match” trophy designed by artist Victor Solomon that will be awarded after every World Cup match through fan voting.

There is also a fan promotion offering one winner a $90,000 role as the tournament’s “Chief Trophy Officer,” complete with the responsibility of carrying the Player of the Match trophy onto the field during the World Cup Final on July 19, 2026.

Additionally giving away more than $1 million worth of match tickets through weekly sweepstakes and bar promotions, while retailers will begin rolling out limited-edition World Cup-themed cans and special U.S. Soccer jersey packaging tied to the campaign.
